This morning Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes reported that the Marlins were close to signing Jose Valverde to a one-year contract, but an hour or so later Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald talked to a source who called the report “utterly false.”
Spencer now has a further update, writing that “not one, not two, but three sources I spoke with shot down the rumor.”
Adding to the fun? Valverde is represented by agent Scott Boras, about whom one of Spencer’s sources said: “This is a typical ploy by Scott Boras to attempt to create a market that doesn’t exist for his players, trying to drum up attention when no market exists.”
I hope the entire HardballTalk readership didn’t just simultaneously die of shock.
