Kevin Millwood’s minor-league contract with the Red Sox included a June 20 opt-out clause, but Sam Dykstra of WEEI.com reports that the 35-year-old right-hander decided to remain at Triple-A Pawtucket, where he has a 4.22 ERA and 30/9 K/BB ratio in 32 innings.
Millwood opted out of a minor-league deal with the Yankees in order to sign with the Red Sox in mid-May, which in retrospect looks like a very questionable decision given New York’s need for starting pitching help.
Boston’s rotation has been thinned out by injuries as well, but the Red Sox bypassed Millwood to call up Andrew Miller and Dykstra reports that his fastball has topped out in the high-80s.
