The Mariners were certainly hoping that Derek Holland -- who was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday against the A’s due to a migraine headache -- would feel well enough to pitch in Sunday’s season finale. But no such luck for Seattle.
Mike Peasley of ESPN Dallas reports that Nick Martinez, not Holland, will take the mound Sunday afternoon versus the Athletics, who currently hold a one-game lead over the Mariners for the second American League Wild Card slot. Holland still isn’t feeling too hot and the 67-84 Rangers don’t have a legitimate reason to force the issue, so they won’t.
Holland finishes the 2014 campaign with a 2-0 record, 1.31 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 24/4 K/BB ratio in 34 1/3 innings (five starts). He missed the first several months of the season due to January knee surgery.
