The Padres have agreed to a minor league contract with first baseman James Loney, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports. Loney was released by the Rays on Sunday, shortly after he was informed that he would not make the club’s Opening Day roster.
Loney turns 32 years old in May and is coming off of a subpar 2015 season in which he hit .280/.322/.357 with four home runs and 32 RBI in 338 plate appearances. He has traditionally hit right-handed pitching better than lefties, so he could serve off the bench for the Padres. Wil Myers lays claim to the everyday job at first base.
