The Giants placed Matt Cain on the disabled list again

The Giants placed starter Matt Cain on the 15-day disabled list with a strained lower back and activated reliever Cory Gearrin from the 15-day disabled list prior to Thursday night’s game against the Mets, ESPN’s Adam Rubin reports.

This is Cain’s third disabled list stint of the season. It’s been another rough year for the right-hander, who owns a 5.81 ERA and a 66/31 K/BB ratio in 83 2/3 innings. He’s under contract for $20 million next season and the Giants have a $21 million club option with a $7.5 million buyout for ’18.

As for now, the Giants have off days on the 22nd and 29th so they have a bit of flexibility with the rotation for the next two weeks and can then reinsert Cain in early September.
