Things get even worse for the Brewers: Jonathan Lucroy out 4-6 weeks with broken toe

The official word on Jonathan Lucroy’s broken left big toe is that the Brewers catcher is expected to miss 4-6 weeks, putting his likely return date somewhere around June 1.

Lucroy took a foul tip off his toe Monday night against the Reds and now the Brewers are left with backup Martin Maldonado is an expanded role and call-up Juan Centeno as the new backup.

Lucroy was off to a slow start, but he was a top-five MVP finisher last season and it’s very tough news for a Brewers team that is 2-12. Maldonado has a good defensive reputation and decent power, but he’s a career .222 hitter with a .649 OPS in 206 games.

Lucroy is joined on the Brewers’ disabled list by second baseman Scooter Gennett, who sliced open his hand while showering in the clubhouse.
