The early part of Sunday’s Opening Day game between the Blue Jays and Rays featured some great displays of defense. Blue Jays first baseman Chris Colabello made a nice diving stop to rob Corey Dickerson of a hit in the first inning. In the top of the second, a Russell Martin line drive deflected off of Rays first baseman Logan Morrison’s glove to second baseman Logan Forsythe, who whipped a quick throw to Chris Archer covering first base for the out by half a step.
The play of the day, though, came in the bottom half of the second. With a runner on first base and two outs, Kevin Kiermaier hit a ground ball to Colabello about 15 feet to the right of the bag. Kiermaier, at the last second, juked to avoid the tag from Colabello. Colabello, thinking fast, fell and tagged the bag with his glove just before Kiermaier could get his foot on. First base umpire Paul Emmel ruled Kiermaier safe, but the Blue Jays challenged and the ruling was ultimately overturned.
