Gomes suffered an MCL sprain in his right knee on April 11 when he got tangled up in a home-plate collision with the Tigers’ Rajai Davis. The initial timetable called for him to miss 6-8 weeks, so he’s returning a little bit earlier than expected. Roberto Perez served as the Indians’ primary catcher while Gomes was out and will now stick around as his backup. Hayes will probably pass through waivers and report to Triple-A Columbus.

Gomes, 27, batted .278/.313/.472 with 21 home runs and 74 RBI in 135 games last season for the Tribe, earning his first Silver Slugger Award. Cleveland (17-23) could use a big offensive boost right about now.
