Brian Shaw says Nuggets may look to add another point guard

The Denver Nuggets have struggled to maintain consistent depth in the backcourt. Ty Lawson is an All-Star-level point guard, but injuries to Nate Robinson and Randy Foye have depleted their guard rotation. Head coach Brian Shaw recognizes it’s a problem.

“I have to hold my breath a lot of times when I take (Lawson) out of the games,” Shaw said. “He has to get some rest at some point. I think (on Sunday) when I took him out, whatever we were down, I think the lead doubled almost during the time that I was able to get him out of the game and get some rest for him.”

Shaw even hinted that the front office could look to add another point guard, whether via free agency or trade.

“Especially with Nate (Robinson) out and Randy (Foye) out, we don’t have another guy to get us into our offense and run things for us,” Shaw said. “So, that’s something as an organization that we’re going to have to think about - having another point guard or adding another point guard or something to our roster where, because if anything happens to Ty (Lawson), we’re in trouble. It’s as simple as that.”

There’s not much out there in the way of free-agent point guards—you’re looking at the Will Bynums and John Lucas III’s at this point. But the Nuggets have plenty of expendable contracts, including J.J. Hickson, Wilson Chandler, Arron Afflalo, Timofey Mozgov and JaVale McGee. Interest in those players may vary, but they have the pieces to make the money work if they want to trade for a point guard at some point in the season.
