Is the other shoe falling now on the latest Red Bulls summer personnel movement?

Reports are rampant today, and still gaining speed, that Everton’s Tim Cahill is on his way to Red Bull Arena.

It really would be quite a coup for the Red Bulls, even at the reported $1.5 million transfer price. Cahill, a longtime Australian international and a fixture at Everton’s Goodison Park since 2004, is a little north of his best playing age.

But at 32, he certainly hasn’t gone feeble and infirm on us. Cahill remains a very effective sort.

Mostly, this would give the Red Bulls the attacking midfielder they’ve long needed.

With a plethora or holding midfielders and linking men, and with ample striking power in Thierry Henry, Kenny Cooper and Sebastien Le Toux, this would more or less complete the team.

Heath Pearce’s recent acquisition fortified the back line, and rookie Ryan Meara has been a year-one sensation in the net. So, yes … check the box on “all set.” (Well, there is a little matter of Rafa Marquez, who could be marginalized in all this, and questions about whether he’ll behave or become a disruption.)

As for Cahill, he’s loved around Goodison by fans and the club for his versatility and all-out effort. Testament to that effort and willingness to insert himself in dangerous places: for a fellow of very average height, Cahill has always had a remarkable ability to drive in goals with his head.

No one from the Red Bulls has commented on the story just yet.
