There’s a lot of good stuff coming out of Orlando, where a small-unit core of national soccer media is arriving in waves ahead of Saturday’s U.S. national team friendly with Scotland.
Yesterday the team’s all-time leading scorer Landon Donovan sat down with four reporters. Donovan doesn’t really do one-on-ones. Not sure why.
At any rate, this is about as close as it comes. And he was quite revealing.
He sounds like he’s 30 going on 43. He’s not going to do anything crazy on us, is he? Like retire soon?
As for actual team news:
From what I can gather talking to reporters and others in Orlando, it sure doesn’t sound like Clint Dempsey will be on the field this weekend against Scotland. A cautious approach with at gimpy groin does seem prudent.
As for performance on the field: I’m hearing that Fabian Johnson has been particularly sharp. If he can slot in ably at left back (where he has played mostly during the spring for Hoffenheim) he could make a lot of folks forget Timmy Chandler was every in the mix.
