Dennard getting ‘close’, but ‘Husker CB’s status for Sat. uncertain

In your weekly Alfonzo Dennard update, the Nebraska cornerback is getting closer to a return but could very well sit out for the third straight game this weekend.

Dennard suffered a pulled muscle in his leg early on in camp, with that injury lingering throughout the whole of the summer sessions and ultimately bleeding into the regular season. He’s missed games against Tennessee-Chattanooga and Fresno State.

Head coach Bo Pelini said Monday that the original prognosis on the time missed because of the injury was 6-8 weeks, and Dennard is currently working on Week 5 of his recovery. Dennard has yet to be ruled of the Washington game Saturday, with Pelini saying only “we’ll see” and “he’s close” when asked if the corner would play this weekend.

The Lincoln Journal-Star surmises that Dennard will not play.

Dennard’s return would certainly help a Cornhuskers’ defense that has been fair to middling the first two games -- they’re 42nd in scoring defense and 45th in total defense. After starting 13 games last season, Dennard was named second-team All-Big 12, so his presence certainly wouldn’t hurt.
