Back in November, Iowa State wide receiver Albert Gary was hit with a rather serious felony charge of first-degree robbery stemming from an incident of theft last summer.
Five months later, Gary entered a plea of guilty to a lesser charge -- first-degree theft. Like the first-degree robbery, first-degree theft is a felony charge, but the latter carries a much lesser penalty and it’s possible Gary could avoid jail time altogether.
The first-degree robbery charge carries a maximum of 25 years in jail.
As part of the plea deal, Gary would serve up to three years probation, pay roughly $2,000 in fines/court costs and spend time in a residential facility so he could continue his education at ISU.
Gary was involved in a June 19 robbery where he, along with others, was accused of robbing a group of victims at gunpoint. The weapon was later discovered to be a pellet gun.
Gary caught 23 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns last season, and was included in ISU’s spring depth chart. Coach Paul Rhoads will not comment on the matter until it is resolved.
