Penn State has made no secret it wants to try something different from a scheduling perspective while the Nittany Lions wait out their postseason ban. A game in Ireland has been one of the ideas floating around, and PSU coach Bill O’Brien said the school is “really close” to finalizing something on that front.
All signs point to that game being played against UCF. The Orlando Sentinel reports that school admins recently returned from a four-day trip to Ireland to discuss the possibility of playing Penn State in further detail. While nothing is official, it would appear the two sides are working toward a 2014 date, which would actually be the second game in a home-and-home the two sides are starting this season. The Knights travel to Happy Valley this September for the first game.
If the reports come to fruition, the game would in all likelihood be played in Croke Park in Dublin. An announcement could come as early as next month.
Notre Dame and Navy opened up the 2012 season in Ireland, with the Irish winning 50-10.
