Spikes hit with half-game suspension

The apparent eye gouge Brandon Spikes attempted to perform on a Georgia running back will cost the Florida linebacker a half of football, head coach Urban Meyer announced this morning.

After viewing replays of the incident, Meyer has decided to sit the All-American for the first two quarters of this Saturday’s game with Vanderbilt.

I don’t condone that,’' Meyer said.

“We’re going to suspend Brandon for the first half of the Vanderbilt game. I talked to [Spikes]; that’s not who he is.’

“I love Brandon Spikes, the team does. We’re going to move on. He has our full support.”

According to Meyer, Spikes was retaliating for being poked in the eye earlier in the game. We have yet to see any video evidence of that occurring. Not that it would matter, though, as it relates to Spikes’ actions.

In the end, the half-game suspension may not be enough for some people, but at least Meyer realized that a strong chat wouldn’t suffice in this case.
