Rangers signed RHP Johnny Cueto to a minor league contract.
Cueto latches on with the defending World Series champions after an underwhelming, injury-plagued campaign last year with the Marlins. The 38-year-old veteran righty will presumably head to Triple-A Round Rock to serve as emergency starting pitching depth and is unlikely to wind up making an impact for fantasy managers at this extremely late juncture in his pretty remarkable 16-year career that dates back to 2008.

Mets optioned RHP Ty Adcock to Triple-A Syracuse.
Adcock, 28, has done a nice job in three appearances with the Mets this season, registering a 3.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and a 5/2 K/BB ratio over his three frames. He threw 24 pitches on Wednesday against the Braves though and was unlikely to be available on Thursday, so the Mets opted to swap him out for a fresh arm. He should get another opportunity with the big league club before the summer is through.
Takeaways from Scherzer's dominant rehab start
Eric Samulski reacts to Max Scherzer's dominant Triple-A rehab start and explains why he could return to last year's form for the Toronto Blue Jays, providing some value in deeper fantasy leagues.

Mets placed RHP Max Kranick on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to June 16, with a right elbow strain.
The 27-year-old hurler has done a nice job out of the Mets’ bullpen this season, compiling a 3.65 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and a 25/5 K/BB ratio over 37 innings of work. No word yet on how long the club expects him to be shelved for, but it’ll be a couple of weeks at a minimum.
  • STL Relief Pitcher #68
Cardinals re-signed LHP Tyler Matzek to a minor league contract.
The 34-year-old southpaw signed a minor league deal with the Cardinals in early June and was released on Monday without having appeared in a minor league game with the organization. He’s expected to report to Triple-A Memphis where he’ll function as extra bullpen depth from the left side for the Cardinals.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #49
    Tigers released RHP John Brebbia.
The Tigers were hopeful that the 35-year-old right-hander would make a solid addition to the back end of their bullpen in 2025, but he struggled to a 7.71 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and a 20/11 K/BB ratio over 18 2/3 innings in his 19 appearances before being designated for assignment and ultimately released. He has had enough success in the league that he shouldn’t have trouble latching on elsewhere and a reunion with the White Sox could seemingly make sense for both sides.
  • ARI 3rd Baseman #28
Eugenio Suárez finished 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and a two-run double Thursday in the D-backs’ 8-5 defeat of the Blue Jays.
The homer off Kevin Gausman was wind-aided and would typically have been a flyout, but this just seems like it’s Suárez’s year. His 22nd homer still leaves him eight shy of last year’s mark, but it matches his total from 162 games with the Mariners in 2023. He’s second in the majors with 162 RBI, one behind Pete Alonso. His current pace would have him finishing with 136. Suárez does already have three 100-RBI seasons under his belt, but his career high is 104 from 2018. 2018 was also the year of his only All-Star appearance, something that figures to change in the coming weeks.
  • ARI Starting Pitcher #19
Ryne Nelson pitched 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball to defeat the Blue Jays on Thursday.
The only hit against him was Alejandro Kirk’s homer in the second. Nelson turned in a dud against the Reds two weeks ago, but he’s allowed one or no runs over at least five innings in his other four starts this season. The middling strikeout rate makes him look like a weak bet in shallow leagues, but he’s a decent play next week with the White Sox on the schedule.
  • TOR Starting Pitcher #34
Kevin Gausman was tagged for seven runs in 4 1/3 innings by the Diamondbacks on Thursday.
Gausman’s median exit velocity today was 82 mph, but two of the four hard-hit balls against him were homers and he gave up four soft singles. He also had three walks and a HBP, though only one of those four runners came around to score. Gausman has walked 12 and hit two batters in four starts this month. He had 12 walks and no hit batters in 11 starts through the end of May. The stuff obviously isn’t quite what it used to be, so he needs to stop with the free baserunners. He’ll face the Guardians next.
  • TOR Catcher #30
Alejandro Kirk hit a pair of homers and drove in three runs against the Diamondbacks on Thursday.
He had half of the Jays’ hits in the 9-5 loss. Making a strong bid for his second All-Star appearance, Kirk is 10th in the majors with a .313 average and has seven homers in 61 games this season after hitting five in 103 games last year.
  • ARI 1st Baseman #26
Pavin Smith had a two-run homer, a sac fly and two walks from the third spot in Arizona’s lineup Thursday against the Blue Jays.
The sac fly might have been a hit — it was unclear whether Jonathan Clase caught the sinking liner to center without it hitting the grass — but the D-backs declined to challenge it with a 9-1 lead. With Corbin Carroll out, Smith hit higher than sixth in the lineup for just the second time since mid-May; the only other time it happened was also with Carroll absent. Smith has an excellent .274/.394/.458 line for the season, but most of that production came in the first four weeks of the season.
  • TOR Starting Pitcher #12
Spencer Turnbull will make his first start for the Blue Jays on Friday against the White Sox.
The 32-year-old hurler has made two appearances out of the bullpen for the Jays, posting a 2.08 ERA, 2.08 WHIP and a 2/2 K/BB ratio across 4 1/3 innings. Given his limited workload so far, he may struggle to get through five innings against the White Sox on Friday, which is something to keep in mind if planning on streaming him in deeper leagues.
