  • TOR Shortstop #13
Blue Jays INF prospect Orelvis Martinez launched a three-run homer on Thursday for Triple-A Buffalo.
Martinez has homered seven times in his last nine games and continues to make a compelling case to get the call to Toronto. The 22-year-old slugger is batting .325 (27-for-83) with a 1.060 OPS through 21 games so far.
  • SF Starting Pitcher #56
Giants recalled RHP Daulton Jefferies from Triple-A Sacramento.
Jefferies had just been optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday, but he’ll return with Tom Murphy (knee) landing on the injured list prior to Sunday’s contest. The 28-year-old hurler has really struggled in two outings for the Giants this season, posting a miserable 17.36 ERA, 3.43 WHIP and a 4/2 K/BB ratio over 4 2/3 innings. He’ll add length in the middle innings for the Giants.
  • SF Relief Pitcher #54
Giants designated RHP Mitch White for assignment.
The Giants were faced with a 40-man roster crunch after losing a pair of catchers to injury, so they needed to free up a spot to add Jakson Reetz on Sunday and White was left as the odd-man out. The 29-year-old right-hander could attract some interest on waivers.
  • SF Catcher #73
Giants selected the contract of C Jakson Reetz from Triple-A Sacramento.
The Giants’ catching depth has been hit hard over the second half of the week, as Patrick Bailey went down with a concussion and Tom Murphy suffered a left knee sprain on Saturday. That leaves Reetz, 28, to serve as the primary backup behind Blake Sabol for the time being. Reetz had been hitting .217/.357/.435 with a pair of homers, nine RBI and an 11/6 K/BB ratio over his first 57 plate appearances.
  • SF Catcher #19
Giants placed C Tom Murphy on the 10-day injured list with a left knee sprain.
As expected, the 33-year-old backstop lands on the injured list after injuring his left knee during Saturday’s battle against the Phillies. With Patrick Bailey (concussion) also shelved, the Giants will rely on Blake Sabol and Jakson Reetz to handle the load behind the plate for the time being. There’s no clear timetable for how long Murphy may be shelved for.
  • CLE Starting Pitcher #59
Carlos Carrasco limited the Angels to one run in six innings as the Guardians prevailed 4-1 on Sunday.
Carrasco picked up his second win while lasting six innings for the first time in seven starts this season. He has a 5.67 ERA and a poor 26/17 K/BB ratio through 33 1/3 innings. Next up for him is a start in Chicago against the White Sox.
  • LAA Starting Pitcher #47
Griffith Canning took a tough loss after allowing two runs in six innings Sunday against the Guardians.
It’s his first quality start of the year. Canning had a shutout going into the sixth, when he allowed a single and then a homer to José Ramírez. He allowed only two other hits in the game, both of which were singles, and walked one. Canning now has a 4.64 ERA in his last four starts. That’s still not great or even very good, but it’s a whole lot better than his 9.88 mark from his first three outings.
  • CLE First Baseman #22
Josh Naylor went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer against the Angels on Sunday.
That’s eight homers and 26 RBI in 32 games for Naylor. He’s fifth in the AL in both categories (tied for fifth in homers). Maybe he won’t keep up the home run pace, but he should boast exceptional RBI numbers throughout.
  • LAA Third Baseman #23
Brandon Drury went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in the loss to the Guardians on Sunday.
Drury is fortunate injuries have left his playing time unchallenged, since he’s struggled mightily in hitting .161/.225/.215. His strikeout rate is actually down, but his power has followed, and he’s been pretty unlucky when it comes to picking up singles. Still, he’ll probably have until Anthony Rendon returns to snap out of it.
  • SD Starting Pitcher #98
Padres recalled RHP Randy Vasquez from Triple-A El Paso.
Vasquez is taking the roster spot of Joe Musgrove after Musgrove was placed on the injured list with triceps tendonitis, and it’s very possible he’ll take his spot in the rotation. The right-hander had a 5.87 ERA over 7 2/3 innings in his two appearances with San Diego before being demoted, and he’ll be a matchup-dependent streamer for those looking to take a chance in the early portion of the year.
  • SD Starting Pitcher #44
Padres placed RHP Joe Musgrove on the 15-day injured list with right triceps tendinitis.
Musgrove was excellent in his start Wednesday against the Red with nine strikeouts and two runs allowed over six innings, but it appears not everything went well in that outing. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the move is “precautionary,” so it’s possible he will only miss a couple of starts before rejoining San Diego’s rotation. For now, it appears Randy Vasquez will take his place in the rotation, as Vasquez was recalled from Triple-A El Paso in the corresponding move.
