  • MIL First Baseman #12
Rhys Hoskins hit a solo homer in a blowout loss Saturday to the Yankees.
Hoskins homered in the first inning off Carlos Rodón to get the Brewers to within two runs at 3-1. The Brewers would only get one more hit off the left-hander and would end up losing by a dozen. Hoskins now has six homers, 18 RBI and a .781 OPS in his first month as a member of the Brew Crew.
  • SF Second Baseman #39
Thairo Estrada hit a solo homer in a loss Friday to the Giants.
Estrada pounced on an Andrew Abbott offering in the first inning for his sixth homer and 21st RBI of the 2024 campaign. It was the only hit of the game for the infielder, and his slash of .248/.276/.434 leaves a bit to be desired.
  • CIN Shortstop #44
Elly De La Cruz stole two bases and went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in a 4-2 win over the Giants on Friday.
With those two steals, De La Cruz is already up to 25 on the season. The speedy infielder also helped turn a terrific double play and remains must-see television anytime there’s a chance to watch. De La Cruz has absolutely lived up to the hype in the early portion of 2024, and then some.
  • CIN Relief Pitcher #43
Alexis Díaz hurled a scoreless ninth to get a save against the Giants on Friday.
Díaz did allow a walk, but he didn’t give up a hit while striking out two, and lowered his ERA to 6.08 in the process. That ERA is less-than-ideal, but keep in mind that it’s mostly from some early scuffles. Díaz should be a fine closing option for the remainder of 2024.
  • SF Starting Pitcher #62
Logan Webb gave up three runs — two earned — while working seven innings in a loss Friday to the Reds.
Webb was much better than his middling start Sunday against the Phillies, but unfortunately it does result in another loss for the 27-year-old. The right-hander gave up eight hits with two walks, and he struck out six. A solid effort, and it lowers his ERA to 3.38 on the season. The Dodgers come next for Webb.
  • CIN Starting Pitcher #41
Andrew Abbott surrendered two runs over five innings in a win Friday against the Giants.
Abbott didn’t have his best swing-and-miss stuff, as he struck out only two while throwing 88 pitches. He didn’t issue a walk, however, and after giving up runs in the first and second inning, he settled down quite nicely. The southpaw sees his ERA tick up slightly from 3.32 to 3.35, but all things considered, this was a good outing for Abbott. He’ll face the D-Backs next week in Arizona.
  • MIL Starting Pitcher #85
Robert Gasser blanked the Cardinals for six innings in his major league debut Friday in the Brewers’ 11-2 victory.
Gasser topped out at four innings in three Triple-A starts after returning from a bone spur in his elbow, which pretty well sums up the state of the Cardinals offense right now. Gasser, the PCL Pitcher of the Year last season, is plenty intriguing going forward; he doesn’t have sky-high upside, but he should be solid and he’s in a pretty good situation in Milwaukee. The Brewers haven’t committed to sticking with him, but one imagines they will after this, making him a viable mixed-league option going forward.
  • MIL Relief Pitcher #57
Kevin Herget recorded his second career save by allowing two runs over the final three innings Friday in the Brewers’ rout of the Cardinals.
Herget also had a three-inning save for the Reds last year. The 33-year-old was making his second appearance for the Brewers after being called up Monday. He’s made a total of 19 relief appearances in the majors since debuting with the Rays in 2021.
  • STL Starting Pitcher #31
Lance Lynn gave up five runs — four earned — in 4 2/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Brewers.
It’s rather remarkable than Lynn has a 3.79 ERA with significantly worse-than-usual strikeout and walk numbers, but it’s a product of him having given up only five homers, compared to 12 barrels. Last year, he allowed 44 homers and 56 barrels. In 2022, when he missed one-third of the season, he allowed 19 homers and 24 barrels. Things figure to pick up in the home run department as the season goes along, which doesn’t bode well at all for Lynn remaining an effective pitcher.
  • MIL Shortstop #27
Willy Adames doubled three times and knocked in two runs Friday versus the Cardinals.
Not only is Adames exceeding expectations with his .265/.351/.476 line, but his seven steals are just one off his career high. Last year, he was 5-for-8 stealing bases in 149 games. This year, he’s 7-for-8 in 38 games. We wouldn’t expect him to keep that up, but it’s hard not to view him as a top-10 shortstop at this point.
  • MIL Left Fielder #9
Jake Bauers followed up his homer Thursday by going 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI, a walk and a steal against the Cardinals on Friday.
There was a legitimate argument for DFAing Bauers and keeping Tyler Black after Christian Yelich came off the IL, but it was a weaker one if Yelich was going to DH frequently. Bauers thinks the Brewers made the right call, and he’s raised his OPS from .639 to .732 the last two days. He’ll play against most righties for now, though that’s not certain to last.
