The Mariners are expected to option outfielder Jonatan Clase to Triple-A Tacoma on Monday.
The 21-year-old wound up appearing in just nine games during his brief stay with the big league club — hitting .222/.250/.259 with zero homers, three RBI, two stolen bases and a 9/1 K/BB ratio in 28 plate appearances. The thinking is probably that it’s best to let him play every day at the Triple-A level and continue to develop as opposed to seeing sporadic playing time with the M’s. Sam Haggerty is expected to be recalled to take his place on the active roster.

Orioles RHP Burch Smith has elected free agency.
The 34-year-old pitched in 50 games between the Marlins and Orioles’ organizations in 2024, posting a 4.95 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 46/12 K/BB ratio in 56 1/3 innings. He has a career 5.79 ERA and was in the Korean Baseball Organization in 2023 so he may have to settle for a minor league deal and win a job in spring training.
  • SF General Manager
Giants hired Zack Minasian Jr. as their new general manager.
Minasian is the brother of Perry Minasian, who is the general manager for the Angels and makes the Minasian Family the first to have two brothers as GMs at the same time in MLB history. Zack Minasian was one of Farhan Zaidi’s first hires when Zaidi was named president of baseball operations. Now that Zaidi has been fired and Buster Posey has taken his place, Posey claimed he wanted a scout as his GM, and Minasian is the Giants’ VP of pro scouting, so he fits the bill. Minasian joined the Giants in 2019 after spending 14 seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he served as a special advisor in the baseball operations department.
  • NYM Starting Pitcher #54
Mets signed RHP Dylan Covey to a one-year contract
It is a major league contract. Despite Covey not pitching in the majors in 2024, he did have 17 starts at Triple-A for the Phillies, posting a 1.35 ERA in those outings. The 33-year-old has leaned on a cutter/splitter pairing a bit more in 2023 which gives him a little bit of intrigue given what the Mets were able to get out of their free-agent signings from last year like Luis Severino and Sean Manaea.
  • BAL Right Fielder #28
Orioles acquired OF Daz Cameron from the Athletics for cash considerations.
The former first-round pick played in 66 games for the Athletics in 2024 after three seasons with the Tigers; however, he hit just .200/.258/.329 with five home runs, five steals, and a 27.4 percent strikeout rate. He figures to serve as organizational dept in the outfield.
  • FA Center Fielder #13
Twins declined their part of a $12 million mutual option for OF Manuel Margot in 2025.
It’s a $2 million buyout on the option and Margot will become a free agent. The 30-year-old hit just .238/.289/.337 in 129 games in 2024 with four home runs and five steals. He still plays above-average outfield defense, so Margot will try to latch on as a fourth outfielder somewhere.
  • BOS Starting Pitcher #54
Red Sox RHP Lucas Giolito exercised his $19 million player option for 2025.
This isn’t entirely surprising. Giolito missed all of the 2024 season after having internal brace surgery on his right elbow in March, so he would have been hard-pressed to find any team willing to offer him that much money in 2025. However, given how early he was hurt, he could be back on the mound for the Red Sox by April or May. An intriguing wrinkle is that the Red Sox would have a $14 million team option on Giolito for 2026 if he doesn’t pitch 140 innings next year. That could be added incentive for the Red Sox to bring him along slowly next year.
  • ATL Starting Pitcher #47
Braves acquired RHP Griffin Canning from the Angels for OF Jorge Soler.
One year after resurrecting the careers of Chris Sale and Reynaldo Lopez, the Braves are taking on another project by acquiring the 28-year-old Canning from the Angels. Canning is coming off a season in which he posted a 5.19 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and a poor 17.6 percent strikeout rate in 171 2/3 innings (31 starts). He has always had a slider that graded out well in pitching models but has failed to build an arsenal around it that can lead to fantasy success. We won’t assume the Braves will be able to help him do that, but they seem as good a team as any to give it a shot. Canning will head into spring training battling for one of the final spots in the rotation.
  • LAA Right Fielder #2
Angels acquired OF Jorge Soler from the Braves for RHP Griffin Canning.
The season hasn’t even been over a full 24 hours and we have our first trade. Soler is coming off a down season that saw him hit .241/.338/.442 in 142 games with 21 home runs, 84 runs scored, and 64 RBI. He figures to serve as the primary designated hitter for the Angels and will add some much-needed thump to the middle of their order. With full-time playing time, he should remain on the fantasy radar for managers who are in need of some late-round power, but the counting stats will suffer. The Angels will pay all of Soler’s $13 million salary for each of the next two seasons. This does mean that Mike Trout spending more time at DH next year seems less likely.
  • TEX Relief Pitcher #57
ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel reports that the Rangers have claimed RHP Roansy Contreras off waivers from the Angels.
Contreras was shifted to the bullpen full-time this year and was fairly successful, posting a 3.86 ERA and a 52/25 K/BB ratio in 60 2/3 innings. He struggled when asked to close games or serve in high leverage situations, but he could be a viable middle relief option for the Rangers and is still just 24 years old.
  • FA Third Baseman #10
White Sox declined their $25 million option on 3B Yoán Moncada for 2025.
One of the least surprising moves of the offseason. Moncada has never lived up to his immense prospect hype and has played more than 104 games just once since 2019. However, he has a career .756 OPS and nine percent barrel rate, so somebody is likely going to take a gamble on him entering his age-30 season. Perhaps being in a part-time role will keep him healthier, but he’s likely to sign a short and inexpensive prove-it deal this offseason in the hopes of resurrecting his value across the league. He will receive a $5 million buyout as compensation for his option being declined.
