Sam Hilliard went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and five RBI on Saturday in a loss to the Braves.
It was a pretty memorable evening against his former club for Hilliard, who slugged a three-run shot off Braves starter Max Fried in the second inning before adding a two-run double in the ensuing frame. It’s performances like this against talented southpaws that will keep Hilliard in the mix for a bench role going forward as a lefty-mashing reserve.
  • NYY Second Baseman #26

DJ LeMahieu will begin a rehab assignment Friday if workouts the next three days go as hoped.
LeMahieu opened the season on the injured list with a strained left calf. He had just two at-bats this spring before getting hurt, and the Yankees have thus far gotten solid production from their third basemen, so the team will definitely want him to spend several days in the minors before he’s activated.
  • STL Relief Pitcher #57
Cardinals transferred LHP Zack Thompson from the 15-day to the 60-day injured list.
Thompson suffered a torn lat muscle five weeks ago, and he’s now out through at least late May. The 27-year-old spent most of last year as a Triple-A starter and was expected to compete for a bullpen this spring.
  • STL Catcher #48
Cardinals placed C Iván Herrera on the 10-day injured list with left knee inflammation.
Herrera’s knee seemed a lot more than “inflamed” yesterday, but we’ll see. It’s a bad break after a scorching start that has him currently leading the NL with a 1.048 slugging percentage. Pedro Pagés will be the Cardinals’ primary catcher in his absence.
  • STL Catcher #5
Cardinals selected the contract of C Yohel Pozo from Triple-A Memphis.
Pozo, 27, returns to the majors for the first time since 2021, when he hit .284/.312/.378 with the Rangers. A very aggressive hitter, Pozo has struck out just nine percent of the time and walked four percent of the time during his minor league career. He’ll serve as Pedro Pagés’ backup until Iván Herrera returns.
  • COL Right Fielder #27
Rockies optioned OF Jordan Beck to Triple-A Albuquerque.
The Zac Veen callup isn’t yet official, but as reported last night, Beck is returning to Triple-A. Given his lack of professional experience (he’s played a total of 89 games between Double- and Triple-A), this is definitely the right move if the Rockies weren’t going to play him regularly. Beck did start the first four games of the season, but he’d been on the bench for three of five since. He was 3-for-20 with no extra-base hits, though he did have three walks and three steals.
  • CWS Relief Pitcher #53
White Sox optioned LHP Brandon Eisert to Triple-A Charlotte.
No countermove yet, and since the White Sox are off today, it might not come until tomorrow. Tyler Gilbert returning from the IL seems like one possibility. Eisert, claimed off waivers from the Rays in February, had pitched three times for the White Sox, giving up four runs in three innings.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher #96
Landon Knack, thought to be a candidate to start this week, is with the Dodgers in D.C. for Monday’s visit to the White House.
He’s yet to be officially recalled. The Dodgers need starters both Tuesday and Wednesday, though they could go with a bullpen game Wednesday if Tuesday’s game goes smoothly. Justin Wrobleski, currently in Triple-A, is one possibility to start Tuesday; he’d be on six days’ rest then. Knack would be on four days’ rest following his last Triple-A start, so he might be more in line for Wednesday. Bobby Miller isn’t an option, since he pitched Sunday.
  • PIT Starting Pitcher #53
Pirates RHP prospect Mike Burrows allowed one run on two hits in 2 1/3 innings in a start for Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday.
The Pirates are building up Burrow’s workload after he missed the beginning of last season following Tommy John surgery. The 24-year-old threw 51 1/3 innings last year and went 3 2/3 innings in his Triple-A debut last week. However, he needed 62 pitches to get through 2 1/3 on Sunday and was removed after striking out two and walking two. The Pirates will continue to build up his pitch count, but when he gets comfortably around 80 pitches, he could be an option for the big league rotation.
  • TB Center Fielder
Rays OF prospect Chandler Simpson went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and a steal for Triple-A Durham on Sunday.
Simpson, arguably the fastest player in all of baseball, is now up to five steals on the season while slashing .297/.325/.351 in eight games with nine runs scored, three strikeouts, and two walks. The Rays are playing Simpson exclusively in CF at Triple-A and are playing Jonny DeLuca exclusively in CF at the MLB level, so it seems that Simpson’s future is directly tied to DeLuca unless we see some position changes start to happen. DeLuca has gone 10-for-23 with four steals to start the season for the Rays and is in no jeopardy of losing his spot any time soon.
  • TB Starting Pitcher #36
Joe Boyle threw four shutout innings for Triple-A Durham on Sunday, allowing three hits and striking out four.
This was the quintessential Joe Boyle start. He showed off tremendous velocity and struck out four in four innings. However, he also walked four and needed 80 pitches to get through four innings. This is going to be a process for Tampa Bay to turn him into a reliable starter.
