George Kirby allowed two runs with nine strikeouts over six innings in a win over the Athletics on Wednesday.
The A’s opened their half of the first inning with a double and a base hit to score a run. Kirby settled in to hold them scoreless across four innings before Oakland brought one more run in to score on two hits in the sixth. The 26-year-old right-hander struck out nine on his way to the win. It was an excellent effort to start September after posting a 6.84 ERA in August. He’ll take a 3.61 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and a 162/21 K/BB ratio across 167 innings into a start against the Padres in Seattle on Tuesday.

James Wood went 3-for-5 with two homers and a walk to power the Nationals past the Dodgers 8-2 on Tuesday.
Both homers were two-run shots off Justin Wrobleski. Wood’s other RBI came on a bases-loaded walk. He now has three homers in two days after going without one in his first nine games. That stretch resulted in him being dropped to fifth in the Nationals lineup for a couple of days. It should be a long time before he bats that low again.
  • WSH Relief Pitcher #61
Brad Lord pitched three scoreless innings Tuesday against the Dodgers in his first major league start.
Lord had pitched a total of two innings in three appearances this season, so he wasn’t a candidate to go deep tonight. He did well to strike out four and limit the Dodgers to two hits. He should remain in the rotation for now and start Monday or Tuesday against the Pirates.
  • LAD Starting Pitcher #70
Justin Wrobleski was tagged for eight runs in five innings by the Nationals on Tuesday.
Even though just one of their eight relievers worked Monday, the Dodgers let Wrobleski wear this one, probably in anticipation of another potentially short start from Landon Knack on Wednesday. Wrobleski will almost surely be sent down then to make room for Knack on the roster.
  • LAD 2nd Baseman #8
Kiké Hernández delivered his fourth homer and walked against the Nationals on Tuesday.
4-for-36, with every hit being a homer. It’s the kind of thing one could see Joey Gallo doing, but not so much Kiké. He’s averaged one homer every 29 at-bats over the course of his career, but he’s currently sporting a .111/.154/.444 line.
  • LAD Center Fielder #44
Andy Pages went 2-for-3 with a homer and a walk against the Nationals on Tuesday.
A nice game for Pages after a defensive blunder Sunday preceded his first day off of the year Monday. He’s now at .162/.311/.270 for the season as he tries to hold off any challengers for his lineup spot.
  • KC Left Fielder #21
Mark Canha was removed from Tuesday’s game against the Twins with left hip soreness.
Canha was involved in a collision with the left-field wall earlier in the contest, which is presumably what led to the injury. He should be considered day-to-day for now.
  • TB 3rd Baseman #24
Christopher Morel was ejected from Tuesday’s game against the Angels.
Morel was tossed by home plate umpire Rob Drake when he spiked his helmet after striking out swinging with the potential go-ahead run at third base and only one out in the eighth inning of this one. He finished 1-for-4 with a double.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher #52
Twins RHP prospect Zebby Matthews struck out nine and allowed two runs over five innings on Tuesday for Triple-A St. Paul.
Matthews significant velocity uptick has carried over from spring training as he averaged a sizzling 96.7 mph on his four-seam fastball. He finished with 14 swinging strikes, with half of those coming on slider. The 24-year-old righty as racked up 13 strikeouts and allowed just two runs over 10 innings through two starts at Triple-A St. Paul. It’s fair to wonder how much longer the Twins can justify keeping him in the minors, especially with ace Pablo López leaving Tuesday’s start against the Royals with a possible leg injury.
  • STL Center Fielder #11
Victor Scott II went 2-for-5 with a two-run triple on Tuesday, leading the Cardinals to a 5-3 victory over the Pirates.
Scott helped the Cardinals snap a four-game losing streak by putting a charge into a ball that split the right-center field gap for a two-run triple against Pirates ace Paul Skenes in the early stages of the contest. The 24-year-old speedster got on-base twice out of the leadoff spot in place of Lars Nootbaar. He’s off to an exceptional start at the dish, hitting .297 (11-for-37) with one homer, seven RBI and four steals in 10 games, and should be rostered in most fantasy formats as a strong steals source.
  • PIT Center Fielder #10
Bryan Reynolds went 2-for-4 with a solo homer on Tuesday in a loss to the Cardinals.
Reynolds was one of the few bright spots for the Pirates on a 38-degree evening at PNC Park. He took Cardinals starter Sonny Gray in the fourth inning before adding a ninth-inning double that ignited a late rally that came up just short. He’s been battling through a lingering right triceps issue recently, so this was an encouraging performance to see.
