Imagine, for a second, that you spent an exorbitant amount of money for a single sporting event. Now picture the scene: you’re at Michigan Stadium on New Year’s Day to watch the Detroit Red Wings play against the Toronto Maple Leafs with about 100,000 strangers.

For many people, it would be tough to conjure those images without also imagining a frosty beer resting in their cold hands, but it was far from a sure thing for the 2013 Winter Classic. Alcoholic beverages aren’t normally sold at Michigan Stadium, but the Associated Press reports that Michigan legislature approved booze for that event.

Now you’ll just try not to picture how much those beers and cocktails will cost ...
