India’s Olympic Association may no longer be recognized by the International Olympic Committee if it fails to comply with “rules of good governance” by Tuesday, IOC president Thomas Bach told The Associated Press.
India, currently under an IOC suspension, has “corruption-tainted officials” in its Olympic Association’s ranks, the AP reported.
“It’s about the principles,” Bach told the AP. “Good governance for the IOC is a key issue. We need to be strict and to make sure the rules of good governance are being applied.”
South Africa was the last nation kicked out of the Olympics, more than 40 years ago due to apartheid. It did not return to the Games until 1992.
The Indian Olympic Committee is scheduled to meet Sunday to consider amending its policies in response to the IOC, according to the AP.
“We will see if there is any last-moment movement,” Bach, elected as president in September, told the AP. “If not, then we have to consider to take the next step.”
India won six medals at London 2012, its most ever, and has never won a Winter Olympic medal.
Indian athletes qualified for the Sochi Olympics may still be able to compete as individuals under the Olympic flag, according to the AP.
