Once dubbed the future worldwide superstar of American soccer, 25-year-old Freddy Adu is in search of a new club team to call home. Again.

After just six months with Serbian side FK Jagodina, Adu was released on Sunday, bringing to an end the 10th stop of Adu’s nomadic professional career which features stints in the United States, Portugal, France, Greece, Turkey, Brazil and now Serbia.

Adu took to Twitter on Monday to clarify one thing, however: That despite making just one first-team appearance for Jagodina, he wasn’t “released” by the club.

Easy guys I signed a 6 month contract. And it’s done now. I didn’t get “released”. Knew I was leaving a few months ago. #truth

Whether or not Adu was “released” by Jagodina isn’t really the issue here. The fact that Adu, who made his pro debut at 14 years of age and was hyped as the savior of American soccer, is 25 and hasn’t managed to stay at a club for more than two years at a time, is. With all due respect to the Serbian league, if Adu can’t get into a team there, where can he find regular first-team games?
