After Sunderland’s abysmal performance and 4-0 shellacking at the hands of Aston Villa on Saturday, it seems as though Gus Poyet’s time is up at the Stadium of Light.
Poyet has been in charge of the Black Cats for 18-months, but multiple reports in England claim that the Uruguayan coach will be fired on Monday by Sunderland’s American owner Ellis Short as a meeting has been called with directors.
During Sunderland’s defeat to Villa on Saturday in front of a near 46,000 crowd at the Stadium of Light, fans vented their anger at Poyet and his players by walking out en-masse and some supporters tried to get into the dugout to confront the Black Cats boss.
With nine games to go Sunderland are in a precarious position as their Premier League status hangs in the balance with the north east club sitting one point and one place above the relegation zone.
It is understood that Poyet will not resign and therefore Ellis and sporting director Lee Congerton will fire the former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder.
Since taking over from Paolo Di Canio midway through the 2013-14 season and leading Sunderland to safety, Poyet’s side have struggled this season with 14 draws from 29 games and they have won just four matches (the lowest of any PL team) all campaign.
Poyet’s record as Sunderland boss isn’t much better as he’s won just 23 matches in 75 games in charge, losing 30 and drawing 22 with a win percentage just over 30 percent. Despite that poor record, he did lead them to the League Cup final in 2014 but Sunderland were beaten by Manchester City.
Sunderland’s next match is away at West Ham United, before facing arch rivals Newcastle after the international break.
