Manchester United and Arsenal are playing, which mean it’s time to revisit Robin van Persie’s status as a former Gunner, current Red Devil and, as usual, a future Gunner.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was again asked whether his former player could soon become the current striker so needed at the Emirates. He dodged the question, shifting it into the focus of Wednesday’s match.

“I don’t think that’s an ideal subject for us to treat today. I think it is best we don’t talk about that at the moment.

“Robin van Persie is a great player. We know that. It doesn’t mean he has to score [against Arsenal on Wednesday]. It depends how we defend against him.”

Wenger also backed Moyes to succeed at Old Trafford.
“You need time and patience,” he said. “You need to be in a strong club and I think he will be given time to do it. When a person has been at a club for such a long time, there is always a void is created when he goes. I believe that Moyes, if given time, will do that perfectly. They continue the same style of play.”

For his part, Moyes has rubbished claims that van Persie could leave Old Trafford, claiming they have a terrific relationship. Perhaps Wenger’s downplaying means we can go back to arguing over whether it’s cool for RVP to celebrate against his old club (ugh).
