Devin Gardner granted medical hardship

As of last November, Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner had applied for a medical hardship waiver that would grant him a fifth year of eligibility. At the time, Wolverines coach Brady Hoke said he felt optimistic that the waiver would be approved.

Turns out, he was right. Gardner was granted his medical hardship and will have two years of eligibility remaining, per a Michigan announcement on Tuesday. You can watch a video interview with Gardner about the waiver HERE.

Gardner, who just finished his junior year, played sparingly in 2010 and sat out most of that year with a back injury.

Gardner played well down the final stretch of the 2012 season for the injured Denard Robinson. He finished the year with 1,219 yards passing with 11 touchdowns to five interceptions. He also saw playing time as a receiver last year to get on the field, where he hauled in 266 yards and four touchdowns.

He should be the favorite to be Michigan’s starting quarterback in 2013.
