  • MIA Relief Pitcher #52
Anthony Maldonado was terrific in his big league debut against the Nationals on Friday, allowing just three hits over three scoreless innings in a no-decision.
The 26-year-old right-hander struck out two batters on the night and didn’t issue a base on balls. Filling in for the injured Jesús Luzardo, Maldonado got seven swings and misses on just 36 pitches in the game — six of those on his slider — while posting a strong CSW of 33 percent. It’s likely that he’ll head back to Triple-A Jacksonville after this start, as the Marlins will want to add another fresh arm to the bullpen while charting a course of action for Luzardo’s rotation spot.
  • OAK Relief Pitcher #19
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports the Athletics’s asking price for flame-throwing closer Mason Miller is steep.
Rosenthal adds that a team source indicates no team has come close to meeting Oakland’s astronomical asking price. The 25-year-old starter-turned-closer has been phenomenal this season, with a microscopic 1.10 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 33/4 K/BB ratio across 16 1/3 innings (13 appearances). It’s entirely possible that no team will come close to coughing up enough prospect capital to make a deal happen, but Miller figures to be at the epicenter of rumors leading up to the trade deadline later this summer.
  • MIN Relief Pitcher #54
Daniel Duarte underwent season-ending right elbow surgery on Tuesday.
Duarte is expected to be sidelined for 14-16 months after undergoing UCL revision reconstruction surgery. The 27-year-old righty has a shot at making it back during the later stages of the 2025 campaign.
  • CWS Center Fielder #88
Luis Robert Jr. (hip) has resumed hitting.
White Sox manager Pedro Grifol told reporters Thursday that Robert has gotten past the slight setback he experienced recently while rehabbing out in Arizona and isn’t far off from starting a minor league rehab assignment.
  • LAD Designated Hitter #17
Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara is pleading guilty to multiple charges including bank fraud and subscribing to a false tax return, according to the Associated Press.
Mizuhara has agreed to plead guilty to bank and tax fraud in a case where federal prosecutors allege he stole nearly $17 million from Ohtani to pay off sports gambling debts to an illegal bookmaking operation. Mizuhara will enter his guilty plea in the coming weeks and is set to be arraigned May 14, bringing an end to one of the more bizarre sagas in baseball history.
  • FA Center Fielder #3
Monte Harrison has committed to the University of Arkansas football program as a walk-on wide receiver.
Harrison was one of the top prospects in baseball last decade, but hasn’t appeared in the majors since the 2022 campaign, and appears to be done playing professional baseball at just 28 years old. The former second-round pick from the 2014 MLB Draft batted just .176/.253/.294 with two homers and seven steals in 50 career contests from 2020-2022 between the Marlins and Angels.
  • CIN Relief Pitcher #79
Ian Gibaut underwent anterior interosseous nerve release surgery on his right arm on Thursday.
Reds manager David Bell declined to provide a return timetable for Gibaut, telling reporters that the hope is he’ll return at some point this season. There was some uncertainty surrounding the type of procedure the 30-year-old righty would wind up requiring and it ended up being the more invasive anterior nerve release procedure that carries a longer recovery timeline.
  • LAA Third Baseman #35
Angels signed INF Drew Ellis to a minor league contract.
Ellis catches on with the Halos following a stint with the Charleston Dirty Birds of the independent Atlantic League. The 28-year-old infielder has appeared in 47 career games in the majors between the Diamondbacks, Mariners and Phillies. He got into 12 contests last year for Philadelphia.
  • PIT Second Baseman #39
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Andrew Destin reports the Pirates will promote infielder Nick Gonzalez on Friday.
Gonzales will get the call back to the majors after batting .358 (43-for-120) with four homers in 137 plate appearances over 30 games this season for Triple-A Indianapolis. The 24-year-old middle infielder got into 35 contests last year for Pittsburgh and simply has nothing left to prove in the upper minors at this juncture.
  • SF Shortstop #16
Nick Ahmed will undergo additional imaging on his left wrist.
Ahmed was lifted from Thursday’s showdown against the Rockies with left wrist discomfort stemming from when he was hit by a 108-mph line drive back on April 27. It certainly sounds like a trip to the injured list to rest and recover could be in the cards for the 34-year-old defensive specialist. It would presumably be former top prospect Marco Luciano getting the call back to the majors if he winds up requiring an extended absence.
  • INT Right Fielder #38
Elier Hernandez has signed with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.
Hernandez heads overseas to Japan after being released last week by the Rangers. The 29-year-old outfielder got into 14 contests for Texas during the 2022 season and has remained at Triple-A Round Rock ever since.
