Carlos Gonzalez took batting practice yesterday for the first time since being placed on the disabled list with a wrist injury on July 22 and afterward reported feeling “a lot better than I expected.”
Jim Armstrong of the Denver Post reports that Gonzalez is scheduled to take another round of batting practice today and then begin a brief minor-league rehab assignment in preparation for potentially coming off the DL as soon as this weekend.
Gonzalez’s injury came at a particularly bad time because he’d finally gotten on track following a rough start to the season, hitting .324 with 12 homers over a 58-game stretch to increase his overall OPS from .647 to .849. In his absence the Rockies have gone 4-6 with Eric Young Jr., Ryan Spilborghs, and Ty Wigginton replacing him in left field.
