  • NYY Shortstop #91
Yankees activated INF Oswald Peraza from the 10-day injured list; optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Peraza was placed on the IL with a shoulder strain during spring training, which gave Oswaldo Cabrera the chance to compete for a starting job. The Yankees also traded for Jon Berti, so the infield has gotten a bit crowded. Peraza will try to get his timing back at Triple-A, but there doesn’t appear to be any path for him to make it back to the big leagues unless there’s an injury to any of the players ahead of him.
  • NYY Shortstop #91
Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reports that Oswald Peraza (shoulder) will start to throw on Wednesday.
The 23-year-old was placed on the 10-day injured list on Opening Day after dealing with shoulder pain during spring training. Boone added that Peraza “should start to build pretty quick from there”, so it sounds like we could see the young infielder in the next week or so. However, Oswaldo Cabrera has filled in nicely for Peraza at shortstop hitting 8-for-20 (.400 AVG) with two home runs and seven RBI in the Yankees’ first five games of the season, so it’ll be interesting to see what the Yankees decide to do when Peraza makes his return.
  • NYY Shortstop #91
Yankees placed SS Oswald Peraza on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to March 25, with a right shoulder strain.
Peraza is expected to be sidelined until at least mid-April after suffering a right shoulder strain a couple weeks ago during spring training.
  • NYY Shortstop #91
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Oswald Peraza (shoulder) is feeling pretty good and is expected to resume hitting in the next couple of days.
Boone added that a more extensive test will take place once he begins throwing again. He is expected to need a few more weeks before he begin tossing the ball around. The 23-year-old underwent an MRI earlier this spring after experiencing shoulder soreness when the strain was found and he is expected to be sidelined from games until at least mid-April.
  • NYY Second Baseman #26
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said DJ LeMahieu (foot) has a “pretty significant bone bruise” and his status for Opening Day is uncertain.
Welp, more injuries for the Yankees as they head into the homestretch of spring training. Boone didn’t rule the 35-year-old third baseman out completely for Opening Day, but the team will monitor how he is feeling in the coming days. Third base is definitely a position that lacks depth in New York. Oswaldo Cabrera played 15 games at third base last season, but he’s more likely to be in the outfield if he’s going to be used defensively. Josh Harrison, who just recently opted for free agency, could be an option for the Yankees if they look for more infield depth.
  • NYY Shortstop #91
Oswald Peraza will be out 6-8 weeks with a right shoulder strain.
Peraza will be out until at least mid-April, which opens the door for utility specialist Jahmai Jones, or someone else entirely, to make New York’s season-opening roster. The 23-year-old infielder underwent an MRI earlier this week to determine the severity of the issue after experiencing right shoulder soreness throughout the spring.
  • NYY Shortstop #91
Oswald Peraza was sent for an MRI because of soreness in his throwing shoulder.
Peraza has been penciled on to the Yankees’ Opening Day roster, but the injury might change that. Really, the Yankees should have been in the market for a veteran utilityman even before this.
  • NYY Shortstop #95
Oswaldo Cabrera finished 0-for-3 with two strikeouts on Tuesday, leaving him 1-for-18 this spring.
Especially once they learned they were getting a fourth option on Oswald Peraza, the Yankees really should have brought in a veteran utilityman this winter. Of course, they still could as players become available at the end of the spring. Peraza is still plenty interesting, but it would make sense to let him play regularly in Triple-A instead of having him serve as a backup while everyone is healthy. Cabrera also appears to be penciled on to the roster, but he just didn’t look like a very useful player last year.
  • NYY Shortstop #91
Oswaldo Peraza was scratched from the Yankees’ Grapefruit League lineup on Tuesday due to tightness in his shoulder.
Yankees’ skipper Aaron Boone indicated that it was just a precautionary measure and said that there were no additional tests planned for the versatile 23-year-old. He should be considered day-to-day for the time being, but it’s a situation that’s worth monitoring.
  • NYY Shortstop #91
Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated that Oswald Peraza is not a sure thing to make the Opening Day roster.
Peraza entered last year’s spring training as the favorite to win the Yankees starting shortstop job but lost out to Anthony Volpe, who had a tremendous spring. Since then, Peraza shifted to playing third base, where he certainly has the arm to stick, but the bat has not been consistent in the majors so far. Something Aaron Boone mentioned. “He has ability and the tools to do it. It’s that last step that can be challenging. Triple A is one thing. Doing it on a consistent basis at the big leagues is another layer.” Boone mentioned that Peraza was battling with Oswaldo Cabrera, Kevin Smith, Jeter Downs, Jorbit Vivas, and Josh VanMeter for the final infield spot on the Opening Day roster.
