It wasn’t easy, but Boston University is one step closer to the Frozen Four.
The No. 1 seed in the Northeast Regional avoided a major scare against No. 4 Yale on Friday, winning 3-2 in overtime on a Danny O’Regan goal that was assisted by Hobey Baker finalist and NHL Draft prospect Jack Eichel.
O’Reagan’s heroics came after a sluggish opening two periods from the Terriers, in which they failed to beat stalwart Bulldogs netminder Alex Lyon. Yale led 1-0 going into the final frame thanks to a second period marker from Nate Repensky, then relinquished that advantage in a four-minute span midway through the third when BU got goals from Ahti Oksanen and Evan Rodrigues to snag a 2-1 lead with less than nine minutes remaining.
But the Bulldogs refused to say die.
Frankie Dichiara scored at the 13:12 mark to even the game at two, and Yale did a nice job of killing off a pair of late penalties to sent the game into OT, before O’Reagan provided the heroics.
With the win, BU now moves onto the Northeast Regional final, where it’ll play the winner of Minnesota-Duluth versus Minnesota, with the winner of that game heading to the Frozen Four in Boston from Apr. 9-11.
