  • STL First Baseman #46
Paul Goldschmidt went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, two RBI, and a stolen base to lead the Cardinals to a 7-4 win over the Mets.
Goldschmidt seems to be warming up at the plate. He collected two hits on Saturday for his third multi-hit game in his last five contests. Goldschmidt drove in two runs with a double in the first inning and scored on a base hit by Masyn Winn. He singled in the fifth and swiped second for his first stolen base of the season before scoring on a balk. The 36-year-old first baseman is slashing .214/.306/.296 with two homers and 11 RBI across 113 plate appearances.
  • SF Right Fielder #2
Jorge Soler (shoulder) will play another minor league rehab contest on Thursday for Triple-A Sacramento.
Soler went 0-for-4 with a strikeout on Wednesday in his rehab assignment debut. The 32-year-old slugger checked out fine after being hit in the head by a deflection during batting practice earlier this week and should be ready to return to San Francisco’s lineup at some point in the near future. He landed on the injured list earlier this month with a right shoulder strain.
  • TB Starting Pitcher #65
Brendan McKay (elbow) has been shut down from throwing for 5-6 weeks.
McKay has been plagued by injuries the last few years and this latest setback figures to knock him out of action at Triple-A Durham for at least three months. The 28-year-old southpaw underwent an MRI earlier this month that revealed a flexor/pronator strain and an accompanying UCL sprain in his left elbow.
  • TB Relief Pitcher #59
Jeffrey Springs (elbow) faced hitters on Wednesday in a live batting practice session.
Springs is slated to pitch in a Rookie-level Florida Complex League contest on Monday in his next outing. The 31-year-old lefty is working his way back from last year’s Tommy John surgery and could be an option for Tampa Bay’s starting rotation sometime around midseason.
  • HOU Left Fielder #20
Chas McCormick (hamstring) will play in another minor league rehab game on Friday for Double-A Corpus Christi.
There was some hope that McCormick would be ready to return to Houston’s outfield mix on Friday, but he’s going to play in one additional rehab contest before a decision is made. The 29-year-old has gone 2-for-11 in three rehab games so far. He’s been out since early May due to a right hamstring strain.
  • CLE Starting Pitcher #32
Gavin Williams (elbow) threw a 50-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday.
The positive news here is that Williams didn’t experience any discomfort in his first bullpen session since receiving an anti-inflammatory injection earlier this month to address right elbow discomfort. He’s scheduled to throw another bullpen session on Friday before the club determines his next steps.
  • SF First Baseman
Giants signed 1B Brady Whalen to a minor league contract.
Whalen is back in the Giants’ system following a 16-game stint with the Lexington Legends of the independent Atlantic League where he crushed four homerd and added six steals in just 72 plate appearances. The 26-year-old infielder spent the 2023 campaign at Double-A Richmond and is merely emergency organizational depth at this stage of his career.
  • TB Starting Pitcher #11
Shane Baz (elbow) allowed one run over 3 1/3 innings on Thursday for Triple-A Durham.
Baz struck out three and only issued a pair of walks. He generated only five swinging strikes, but was able to locate the strike zone effectively, throwing a whopping 49 of 69 pitches for strikes. It was a much-needed improvement after handing out five free passes his last time out. The 24-year-old former top pitching prospect remains without a definitive timetable to return to Tampa Bay’s starting rotation as he continues to build up his pitch count and stamina in the minors.
  • BAL Second Baseman #7
Orioles 2B/SS prospect Jackson Holliday went 2-for-5 with a solo homer and two RBI on Thursday for Triple-A Norfolk.
Holliday has made some subtle tweaks to his batting stance since returning to the minors and is batting .240/.424/.420 with two homers and two steals in 14 contests since the start of May for Triple-A Norfolk. More impressively, he’s drawn 16 walks and only struck out 15 times during that span. The precocious 20-year-old top prospect is going to get another chance in the majors at some point, but it doesn’t sound like the Orioles are going to rush him back. It’s extremely encouraging that he’s making adjustments and showing improvement right now.
  • BAL Third Baseman #86
Orioles 3B prospect Coby Mayo made a precautionary exit from Thursday’s game for Triple-A Norfolk with an undisclosed injury.
Mayo was lifted from Thursday’s contest out of an abundance of caution following a collision with part of the third-base dugout. The 22-year-old top prospect is batting .291 with 13 homers and three steals through 42 contests for Triple-A Norfolk and appears to be on the precipice of ascending to the majors. There should be some clarity on his status at some point in the coming days.
  • PHI Starting Pitcher #99
Taijuan Walker was removed from Thursday’s start against the Mets with a left foot contusion.
Walker was struck on the left foot by a 99.7-mph line drive from Starling Marte in the fourth inning and will most likely head for further imaging to determine whether he suffered any fractures. He finished with one strikeout and was charged with two runs over 3 1/3 innings of work. Any potential extended absence would presumably lead to Spencer Turnbull returning to Philadelphia’s starting rotation mix, but it sounds like there’s a chance he managed to avoid serious injury. There should be some clarity on his status at some point soon.
