Phil Neville is off the Manchester United coaching staff

GiggsNeville

37-year-old Phil Neville, who followed David Moyes from Everton to Manchester United, is no longer a part of the backroom staff at Old Trafford.

On the same day that BBC announced Neville is part of their Match of the Day team, the former United midfielder tweeted a very simple “no” when a fan asked if he was still on the coaching staff.

Neville will for the time being focus solely on his commentary duties, as well as helping to run semi-professional club Salford City FC, which he purchased along with his brother Gary and fellow United academy graduates Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and Nicky Butt.

He holds a UEFA-B coaching license, and began his coaching career under Stuart Pierce with the England international team while still captaining Everton on the pitch. When he retired in the summer of 2013, he interviewed for the vacant Everton job, but eventually joined Moyes at Manchester United when the job went to Roberto Martinez.

Neville stayed when Moyes was sacked, with Giggs temporarily in charge and Scholes and Butt all on the staff as well. But with Louis van Gaal now in charge, it appears Neville is no more than a spare part.

Now, he has the job of replacing longtime BBC commentator Alan Hanson after making his on-air debut during the World Cup.
