The Premier League may be struggling to compete in the Champions League of late, but that doesn’t mean top stars aren’t still interested in the richest league in the world.
Bayern Munich superstar Thomas Muller admitted after Germany’s defeat to the Republic of Ireland that salaries in the Premier League would be a tempting prospect to top players like him.
“Ultimately, we should not forget that football is our job, and that’s why people must accept that salaries play a role in our decision-making. Of course, such salaries [like those in the Premier League] are tempting; to say anything else would be hypocritical,” Muller admitted to German publication Welt am Sonntag.
Many other leagues have reacted negatively to the recent influx of money into the English league, saying it will push all other leagues to the side. But Muller sees it from a different perspective. “That can only be good for the football market, if clubs can invest so much money,” Muller said. “I know that many German clubs perceive this as threatening, but everyone benefits.”
Manchester United reportedly attempted to lure Muller away from the Bundesliga this past summer, but Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummennigge stood firm on his top goalscorer. “I am not a banker. We are a football club,” Rummenigge told German television station Sport1 in June. “That is why we never even considered selling Thomas Muller.
Unfortunately, if the player wants a higher salary, it may be hard to convince them to stay.
