  • SEA Relief Pitcher #45
Ryne Stanek allowed a solo homer but still picked up a save against the Cubs on Friday.
The homer was a solo blast by Michael Busch that cut the Seattle lead to 4-2. Andres Muñoz faced the top Cubs’ hitters in the eighth inning, so it was Stanek who came in to pitch the ninth. The right-hander has picked up two saves on the young year, and with the Mariners using Muñoz in the most high-leverage of situations rather than saving him for the ninth, there’s a good chance the 32-year-old could have a few more this year before all is said and done.
  • LAA Third Baseman #6
Anthony Rendon, on the 60-day IL with a hamstring tear, said he’s progressed to walking on an incline on a treadmill.
That still seems like it might be a few steps away from playing in a major league baseball game. Rendon was injured a month ago today and still has another month before he’ll be eligible to come off the IL. A return right after the All-Star break is probably the best-case scenario.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #18
The Tigers have yet to make a decision on whether they’ll activate Kenta Maeda to start this week.
Maeda allowed one run and struck out six in three-plus innings for Triple-A Toledo in his rehab start Sunday. He’s expected to get another shot in the Detroit rotation, but the Tigers could ask him to make one more rehab start and use Matt Manning again this week.
  • MIL Right Fielder #28
Brewers activated OF Joey Wiemer from the 10-day injured list.
Wiemer missed 16 days with left knee soreness. The Brewers could have just sent him down, as he wasn’t playing well before getting hurt, but they’ve instead decided to go with him over Chris Roller. He’ll likely play against lefties and come off the bench versus righties. He’s starting in center field and batting ninth tonight against Ryan Weathers.
  • MIL Starting Pitcher
Brewers recalled RHP Bradley Blalock from Double-A Biloxi.
This is pretty unexpected, and even Blalock said he was surprised by the move. The 23-year-old will join the Brewers bullpen for now after posting a 2.27 ERA in seven starts for Biloxi. It might be a short stint, but he could be interesting as a starter later this year if he continues to progress.
  • MIL Center Fielder #18
Brewers optioned OF Chris Roller to Triple-A Nashville.
So much for Roller getting any sort of look. He struck out in his lone at-bat during his five days with the Brewers.
  • MIL Relief Pitcher #49
Brewers designated RHP Thyago Vieira for assignment.
Vieira loses his spot after posting a 5.64 ERA in 22 1/3 innings out of the pen. He still has the live arm capable of delivering 95-99 mph fastballs, but all it’s gotten him is a 6.18 ERA since he debuted with the Mariners in 2017. Even so, there’s a decent chance that someone will claim him, since he’s making the minimum and can eat innings out of the pen.
  • KC Relief Pitcher #59
Royals activated LHP Jake Brentz from the 15-day injured list and optioned him to Double-A Northwest Arkansas.
Brentz returned from Tommy John surgery at the end of last year, only to go down with a hamstring injury this spring that cost him six weeks. He had been struggling mightily on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Omaha, giving up nine runs and walking 17 in six innings, so he’ll head to Double-A for now. The 29-year-old looked like a promising lefty reliever in 2021, but at this point, he might be the next player bumped from the 40-man if the Royals need to add someone.
  • NYY Relief Pitcher #41
Yankees designated RHP Colby White for assignment.
The move makes room for Clayton Andrews on the 40-man roster. White had just been claimed from the Rays on May 9. He made two appearances for Double-A Somerset, giving up two runs in two-thirds of an inning.
  • FA Second Baseman #13
    Mets released INF Joey Wendle.
Wendle was designated for assignment last week after hitting .222/.243/.250 in 37 plate appearances for the Mets. He’ll probably resurface with another club this summer, though he might have to take a minor league deal initially.
  • BAL Relief Pitcher #46
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde mostly confirmed Monday that Craig Kimbrel is again Baltimore’s closer.
It’s no surprise after Kimbrel picked up a clean save Sunday, but confirmation is always nice. MASN’s Steve Melewski quoted Hyde as saying: “Well yeah, I think so. Probably. I’m going to see how he feels today. … He looked great yesterday that was awesome. Really happy.” Yennier Cano can be dropped in shallow mixed leagues for now.
