  • TOR Center Fielder #25
Daulton Varsho went 2-for-4 with two homers and three RBI on Wednesday in the Blue Jays’ loss to the Yankees.
Varsho belted a two-run homer off Yankees starter Marcus Stroman and also went deep off lefty reliever Caleb Ferguson a couple frames later to record his second career multi-homer performance. It’s the first time he’s accomplished the feat since September 7, 2022. The 27-year-old former catcher is off to a slow start at the dish, batting .218 (12-for-55) with four homers, eight RBI and one steal through 19 games.
  • Relief Pitcher #73
Cardinals selected the contract of RHP Kyle Leahy.
Leahy will be the 27th man on the active roster for Tuesday’s doubleheader. The 26-year-old made just three appearances for St. Louis last season and will likely be sent back down to the minors following a short stint with the Cardinals.
  • STL Starting Pitcher #38
Cardinals transferred LHP Drew Rom (bicep) to the 60-day injured list.
The 24-year-old has been dealing with left bicep tendonitis since the end of spring training and it appears he’ll need more time to ramp up before making his season debut. Last week, Rom visited Dr. Keith Meister in Texas to evaluate his bicep but there hasn’t been any details provided from that visit.
  • MIN Starting Pitcher #74
Twins sent RHP Josh Winder (shoulder) on a rehab assignment to Single-A Fort Myers.
Winder is slowly ramping up to get back to the majors after he landed on the 60-day injured list prior to the regular season with a shoulder injury. He’ll start for Fort Myers on Tuesday, but he’ll need several more starts in the minors before he’s 100%. Last season, the 27-year-old hurler posted a 4.15 ERA, 1.41 WHIP with a 28/14 K/BB ratio in 19 appearances for Minnesota. He hasn’t made a start in the big leagues since 2022.
  • FA First Baseman #21
White Sox signed 1B Jared Walsh to a minor league contract.
Walsh will report to Arizona before he is assigned to Triple-A Charlotte. The 30-year-old hit .226/.317/.321 with a home run and seven RBI in 60 plate appearances with the Rangers this season, but was let go after the team brought back Nathaniel Lowe from the injured list.
  • OAK Starting Pitcher #35
Joe Boyle allowed only one hit while pitching five innings of one-run ball Monday in Oakland’s 5-1 win over Pittsburgh.
Boyle walked four, but it didn’t matter much with what little hard contact the Pirates made turning into routine outs. The victory moved Boyle to 2-4 with a 6.08 ERA. He doesn’t seem like a very good bet going forward, but he’s not an awful choice with a home start versus the Marlins coming up next.
  • PIT Starting Pitcher #26
Bailey Falter lost to the A’s after allowing five runs in five innings on Monday.
Falter was picked up in a bunch of leagues this week because he had the greatest two-start schedule ever dreamed up; he was facing the A’s on the road and the Rockies at home. Start No. 1 was a bust, but at least he did manage five strikeouts and a 1.2 WHIP. Start No. 2 will likely be better.
  • OAK First Baseman #26
Tyler Nevin went 2-for-3 with a homer against the Pirates in Monday’s win.
It was his third homer. Nevin has a nice .301/.350/.452 line in 80 plate appearances for the A’s, but the exit velocity numbers aren’t really there to back it up and he might find himself out of favor once the A’s get healthier; it’s doubtful he would have been claimed in the first place if not for Miguel Andujar’s injury.
  • CIN Starting Pitcher #40
Nick Lodolo limited the Padres to one run and one hit while striking out 11 in seven innings Monday in the Reds’ 5-2 victory.
That Lodolo has looked this good this soon after his season-opening IL stint has been a very nice surprise. Maybe he’s not as good of a bet to stay healthy as some, but he’s throwing like an ace right now and the stuff is there for him to keep it up.
  • SD Starting Pitcher #61
Matt Waldron lost to the Reds after allowing four runs in six innings Monday.
Waldron has all of the tricks up his sleeve, but they’d work a whole lot better if he could throw 95 mph. He topped out at 92.1 mph tonight and averaged 90.2 mph with his four-seamers and sinkers. He’ll hold his own against subpar offenses, but top lineups are going to remain a big issue.
  • CIN Right Fielder #27
Jake Fraley went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Monday, leaving him hitless in a sixth straight game.
Fraley was off to a terrific start and had a case to take over as the Reds’ leadoff man, but he went hitless in three games before missing time with an illness and has remained hitless in three games since returning. He’s struck out in five of his eight at-bats the last two days, and his OPS has dropped from 1.065 two weeks ago to .773 now.
