It wasn’t much, but this year’s NBA season had its “Dewey defeats Truman” moment. As the Los Angeles affiliate of CBS pointed out recently, JC Penny ran an ad in the Los Angeles Times that featured lots of Laker championship merchandise -- T-shirts, hats, et cetera.
They also offered a special promotion; with any purchase of $50 or more, JC Penny would throw in a free replica championship trophy. The only problem? As some eagle-eyed Times readers were able to see, the trophy had “2010 NBA Champions Boston Celtics” on it instead of the more LA-friendly and factually accurate “2010 NBA Champions Los Angeles Lakers.” I would assume that the actual trophies JC Penny gives out will have the correct engraving on them, but I still doubt this will be the most effective promotion JC Penny ever does.
