When Brady Hoke takes the spring practice field for the first time as Michigan’s head coach this weekend, he’ll do so without a full complement of Wolverines thanks to injuries both past and present.
The most recent of the injuries involved running back Mike Shaw. Last year’s third-leading rusher suffered a broken bone in his hand after trying to catch himself.
Hoke said the senior-to-be will “be limited Saturday for sure, but after that they can cast him up” and will apparently be good to go for the remainder of the spring sessions.
In addition to Shaw, a pair of veteran defensive backs will also be limited from the outset, although they likely won’t participate fully at all during the spring.
Redshirt junior J.T. Floyd (no relation) is coming off foot surgery and “won’t play as much this spring” according to Hoke, while fifth-year senior Troy Woolfolk, who suffered a nasty dislocated ankle and broken leg last season, will likely be even more limited than Floyd as the school appears set on erring on the side of extreme caution.
“Woolfolk is getting better, but at the same time it wouldn’t be intelligent of us to have him doing a whole lot out there,” Hoke said.
The Wolverines will begin spring practice Saturday, March 19.
