Before Graeme McDowell headed to Chicago for this week’s Ryder Cup, the Northern Irishman first made a pit stop in Birmingham, Ala.

On Monday, he greeted players competing in the 11-team Shoal Creek Intercollegiate hosted by Graeme McDowell – a college event featuring LSU, North Texas, Houston and UAB, among others.

“If I can do my bit to help the program and the school, then I’m glad to do so,” McDowell said, according to the Birmingham News. “This is not about me. I don’t want any recognition. I just want to have a chat with the kids.”

McDowell won a school-record nine times in his three seasons at UAB, and in 2002 he captured the Haskins Award as the nation’s top player.

Alan Kaufman, the head coach at UAB, likened G-Mac to Arnold Palmer. “He’s just a real people person,” he said, according to the report. “All the success he has had, he’s still just the type of individual who wants to give back.”
