Mariners likely to hire internal candidate for team president

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported Thursday that Tony La Russa would be on Mariners’ short list for their team president job if the organization looks to outside candidates, but it doesn’t sound like the process will make it that far.

According to Greg Johns of MLB.com, the Mariners will likely stay in-house for the hire. It’s unclear who is being considered for the position, but Johns names executive vice president of business operations Bob Aylward, executive vice president of finance Kevin Mather, executive vice president of legal affairs Bart Waldman, and vice president of marketing Kevin Martinez as possibilities.

The search is expected to intensify next week when the team’s board of directors interviews two internal candidates for the position. A decision is expected to be made before the end of the month, which is when outgoing team president Chuck Armstrong is set to retire.
