Two-time reigning Olympic champion Canada won its first World Hockey Championship since 2007 by beating Russia 6-1 in the gold-medal game in Prague, Czech Republic, on Sunday.
Cody Eakin, Tyler Ennis, Sidney Crosby, Tyler Seguin, Claude Giroux and Nathan MacKinnon scored Canada’s goals.
Canada, captained by Crosby, went 10-0 at the World Championship, outscoring its opponents by a combined 51-goal margin. Crosby, who tallied a point in all 10 games, earned his first Worlds gold medal, becoming the 26th player to win Olympic and Worlds golds and a Stanley Cup.
Russia, which lost in the 2010 and 2014 Olympic quarterfinals, failed in a bid to repeat as World champion and take its fifth gold in the last eight years of the annual tournament.
The Russians, aided by the arrival of Alex Ovechkin after the Washington Capitals were eliminated from the NHL playoffs Wednesday, reached the final by avenging a group-play defeat to the U.S. in Saturday’s semifinals.
Russia will host the 2016 World Championship.
