Kenyan Amos Kipruto and Ethiopian Hawi Feysa won the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, while Emma Grace Hurley ran the fastest debut marathon in U.S. women’s history.
Kipruto prevailed in the men’s race in an unofficial 2:01:09, matching the fifth-fastest marathon in history.
Kipruto, the 2022 London Marathon winner, placed third in Chicago in 2024 and second in Chicago in 2025.
“It was either win or die for me,” he said on NBC 5 Chicago, “because I was here to fight for the podium.”
Ethiopian Tadese Bikila was runner-up, 1:47 behind. Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo, the 2025 champ and third-fastest man in history, was fourth in 2:04:18.
Paris Olympian Clayton Young was the top American in seventh place, running 2:05:23 on a torn hamstring, the second-fastest time in American history on a record-eligible course.
Training partner Conner Mantz ran the American record of 2:04:43 in Chicago last year.
“We missed the goal,” Young said of the record. “I’ll have another swing at it soon.”
It’s the fourth consecutive year that Young placed seventh in a major marathon after Chicago in 2023, New York City in 2024 and Boston in 2025.

Vincent Mauri, who gained fame leading up to the race for training on a Planet Fitness treadmill, was on American record pace through 21 miles before stopping and stretching his legs multiple times. He ended up 10th in 2:06:45.
Feysa pulled away from Kenyan Sharon Lokedi in the last mile to repeat as women’s champ in 2:13:33.
Lokedi, a past Boston and New York City Marathon champion, finished 34 seconds later.
Hurley was the top American in seventh in 2:20:47, shattering the record of fastest debut marathon for a U.S. woman set by Fiona O’Keeffe in winning the 2024 Olympic Trials in 2:22:10.
“It was a little intimidating on the start line, knowing that I was about to run further than I ever had,” Hurley said.
Hurley also ran the fastest marathon by a U.S. woman since the Paris Olympics, clipping Jess McClain’s time from Boston in April by two seconds. The Olympic Trials for the Los Angeles Games are in March 2028, with the top three likely to make up the team.
Hurley, a 28-year-old from Indianapolis who has never raced an Olympic Trials, was the top American at the World Half Marathon Championships in fifth place on Sept. 20.
The last major marathon of 2026 is the New York City Marathon on Nov. 1.
