U.S. men’s flag football wins sixth consecutive world title as Olympic debut approaches

The U.S. men will go into flag football’s Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games as the reigning world champion, but it didn’t come easy.

The U.S. won a sixth consecutive global crown, but in Dusseldorf, Germany, suffered its first defeat in World Championship play in 14 years — in group play Friday to American Samoa, which was led by former Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa (younger brother of Tua Tagovailoa).

The Americans rebounded to win all three playoff games, including dominating Italy 46-26 in Sunday’s final, led by quarterbacks Darrell “Housh” Doucette III and Nico Casares.

“This tournament’s been one of the toughest for us,” Doucette said in a halftime broadcast interview, when the U.S. was up 38-8. “It humbled us. We got put in our place a little bit. But at the end of the day, this is the team that showed up. This is the team that practiced all through training camps to do this type of performance.”

Italy’s roster included Vinny Papale, whose dad is Vince Papale, the 1970s Philadelphia Eagle who was the subject of the 2006 film “Invincible” starring Mark Wahlberg.

On Saturday, the U.S. trailed late in a quarterfinal against Japan (before going up 45-38 on a touchdown and two-point conversion with 1:47 left). And in a semifinal against Mexico (before going up 42-40 on a touchdown with 22 seconds left).

In Sunday’s women’s final, Canada topped the U.S. 27-20, snapping the Americans’ streak at three world titles in a row.

The U.S. trailed late in all three of its playoff games: also in the quarterfinals to Germany before going up 35-34 on a touchdown with 28 seconds left. It also needed a touchdown with 19 seconds left to overtake Great Britain 26-21 in the semifinals.

The U.S. women were led by a 17-year-old quarterback — Akemi Higa, who grew up in Hawaii and just finished high school in Las Vegas.

Italy and Canada clinched spots in the 2028 Olympic men’s field as the top two finishers aside from the U.S., which automatically qualifies as host nation.

Canada and Mexico claimed the two available women’s spots.

The last three men’s teams and women’s teams to qualify for the six-team Olympic tournaments will be decided at the Olympic Q-Series stops in June 2028 in Montreal and Orlando.

The Los Angeles Olympics, with a record 353 medal events, open July 14, 2028.
