Jorrit Bergsma tops Sven Kramer in 10,000m; 4th speedskating sweep for Dutch in Sochi
Jorrit Bergsma delivered an upset in the 10,000m, defeating world-record holder and Dutch teammate Sven Kramer to win the gold after finishing with the bronze in the men’s 5000m.
Bergsma - who had defeated Kramer at this distance in the 2013 world championship and is also the fiance of U.S. speedskater Heather Richardson - turned in a new personal best and Olympic record time of 12:44.45, while Kramer, after appearing to be on pace to break his own world record, fell off in the final laps to finish 4.57 seconds behind.
Bob de Jong nabbed his third consecutive Olympic medal in the 10,000m (gold at Torino in 2006, bronze at Vancouver in 2010), winning the bronze to complete a fourth Dutch speedskating sweep in Sochi.
Altogether, the Dutch have won 19 speedskating medals in these Games - six golds, six silvers, and seven bronzes.
The U.S. skaters, first-time Olympians Emery Lehman and Patrick Meek, finished 10th and 11th respectively.
