Tate Taylor and Mia Maxwell completed sweeps of the 100m and 200m titles at the World U20 Track and Field Championships as the U.S. won four total gold medals on Saturday.
Taylor, an 18-year-old from San Antonio set to run for Texas Tech, won the men’s 200m in 19.83 seconds, a championship record, at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field. Fellow American Blake Hamilton earned silver in 20.31.
Taylor won the 100m on Thursday in 9.94.
On July 4, Taylor won the 200m at the Prefontaine Classic in a personal best 19.75 seconds into a .9 meter-per-second headwind over a field that included 2024 Olympic gold medalist Letsile Tebogo of Botswana.
The only teenagers to ever run faster were American Erriyon Knighton (19.49 at age 18) and Australian Gout Gout (19.67 at 18).
Maxwell, an 18-year-old from outside Houston set to run for Texas, took the women’s 200m in 22.37 seconds on Saturday. Twin sister Mariah earned bronze in 22.77.
Taylor and Maxwell are the first Americans to sweep the 100m and 200m at a World U20 Championships.
The U.S. also swept the men’s and women’s high hurdles for the first time since 2004.
Le’Ezra Brown tied the world U20 record in the 110m hurdles of 12.72. Fellow American Zacchaeus Brocks earned bronze in 12.98, .01 behind Jeremy Koga of Japan.
In the 110m hurdles, the U.S. boasts the reigning Olympic gold medalist (Grant Holloway), reigning world champion (Cordell Tinch), the world record holder (Ja’Kobe Tharp, who won the 2024 World U20 title) and now the world U20 champion in Brown, a rising University of Georgia sophomore.
The U20 world record — shared by Brown and Frenchman Sasha Zhoya — is faster than Tharp’s senior world record of 12.75 because the 110m hurdles are three inches shorter in U20 competition.
Madeline Cooper, also a rising Georgia sophomore, took the 100m hurdles in 12.91, becoming the first American to win that title since Tia Jones in 2018.
