Claire Pease, Charleigh Bullock earn first two spots on World Gymnastics Championships team

Claire Pease and Charleigh Bullock will go to their first World Gymnastics Championships, earning the first two spots on the five-woman U.S. team.

Pease, 17, and Bullock, 16, had the highest combined all-around scores between the Xfinity U.S. Championships in August (weighted at 40%) and a selection competition on Wednesday in Crossville, Tennessee (weighted at 60%).

Each overtook 2024 Olympian Hezly Rivera, who repeated as U.S. all-around champion in August but dropped in the combined standings Wednesday with two falls off the uneven bars.

Rivera can still make her first world team. The last three members will be decided by a committee after the second and final day of the selection competition on Thursday.

Worlds in Rotterdam from Oct. 17-25 include the first women’s and men’s team competitions at a global championship since the Paris Games.

The 2025 Worlds included individual events only.

Pease, who trains with Rivera outside Dallas, went from 10th at the 2025 U.S. Championships to runner-up to Rivera at this year’s nationals, then had the highest all-around score Wednesday.

Bullock will become the youngest U.S. gymnast at a worlds since 2018 (Kara Eaker, Grace McCallum). Last month, she placed third at the U.S. Championships, the best finish for a woman in her senior debut season since Suni Lee was runner-up in 2019.

Others in contention for the three remaining world team spots include the two-time Olympic gold medalist Carey, who is competing on the elite level this season for the first time since the Paris Games.

Carey could be valuable for the U.S. team at worlds on floor exercise, which she won at the Tokyo Games, and vault, which she won at the 2022 Worlds.

Plus Skye Blakely, who was the 2024 U.S. all-around runner-up to Biles. Blakely then ruptured her right Achilles’ tendon while training on floor exercise two days before the 2024 Olympic Trials.

She came back to make her third consecutive world championships team in 2025, placing fourth on uneven bars.

Newcomers in the mix include 17-year-old Reese Esponda, who like Carey is strong on floor and vault.

The U.S. men’s team for worlds was named in August after nationals.

Charleigh Bullock is the youngest gymnast to make a U.S. all-around podium since Suni Lee in 2019.
