Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur will both be deeply frustrated with parts of their 1-1 draw on Saturday, but they put on a brilliant advertisement for the Premier League yet again.
MORE — Three things we learned | Carrick reaction | De Zerbi reaction
Below are all of the updates and highlights from Old Trafford, where a point apiece does very little for either side at a crossroads moment so early in the season.
- Spurs couldn’t have played any better for 60 minutes, besides putting the ball in the back of the net. Roberto De Zerbi’s side was beyond prepared and dominated Man United in every conceivable way.
- Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring in the 73rd minute, shortly after the tide turned Man United’s way, and Rodrigo Bentancur got himself sent off for head-butting Luke Shaw five minutes later. Game over, right?
- Wrong. Dominic Solanke got a hair or two on Sandro Tonali’s cross and redirected it past Senne Lammens in stoppage time.
- Spurs are no longer bottom of the Premier League table (up to 18th), but are still winless after six games.
- Manchester United are off to their worst start to a league campaign in 40 years.
A very long last, Spurs have been punished for their wastefulness. Bryan Mbeumo provided a brief moment of individual quality as he turned both ways to free himself from Jan Paul van Hecke and fire it low and hard toward the far post.
An absolute soul-crusher for Tottenham Hotspur.
You know, sometimes football makes no sense. Spurs are level after Dominic Solanke put the slightest of headers on the ball at the back post. It was Sandro Tonali’s floated ball that found him and, against every power of the universe, Spurs might not lose today.
It’s gone from bad to worse for Spurs. Rodrigo Bentancur has been shown a straight red card for making head-to-head contact with Luke Shaw.
Bentancur and Van Hecke went in full-force on a pair of challenges and Bentancur booted the ball away afterward, then Shaw gave Bentancur a two-handed shove to the ground and that incensed the Uruguayan. Bentancur lost his head after Shaw’s further provocation.
Ever since Man United made three subs in the 59th minute, it’s been a complete reversal of the opening hour of this game. United were all over Spurs, pinning them in and looking like the only side that turned up today.
Roberto De Zerbi responds with a pair of subs of his own. Omar Marmoush is on for Mohammed Kudus and will support Dominic Solanke up top, while Rodrigo Bentancur replaces Lucas Bergvall deeper in midfield. Fresh legs and hopefully a new idea or two.
Baleba gets a huge roar from the home fans here and they know how important he is going to be to the balance of their team.
The summer signing from Brighton, who has been out injured, has made an impact right away.
First he muscled his way past a few tackles and played a good ball out to Fernandes.
He is urging his United teammates to press higher and makes two important tackles on the edge of his own box after making up plenty of ground.
This is better from Man United, who have woken up after those Spurs chances.
First Bruno Fernandes dances into the box but instead of shooting he takes too much time and Udogie comes across to clear.
Then Cunha whips in a cross to the near post but Spurs clear, then he sets up Tielemans to slot home but the ball was already out of play.
This is a really open game now.
Savio is at the heart of it again as his cross is on a plate for Solanke, who is six yards out.
Spurs’ main striker and captain is stretching but he puts the ball up and over the bar from close range.
He can’t believe it. Roberto De Zerbi can’t believe it. Nobody here in Old Trafford can believe it.
Dominic Solanke NEARLY scores on a brilliant cross from Savio but we remain goalless at Old Trafford.

We have a reaction from Man United.
Luke Shaw is played in and his dangerous cross is close to goal but Van Hecke clears.
The game is really opening up now as a surging run sets up Savio.
He races clear but his cross is cleared off his own line by Shaw with Solanke waiting to finish.
Half time here at Old Trafford and there were audible boos from the home fans.
That was really poor from United. They were totally overpowered by Spurs, who pressed high, dominated midfield and Savio and Kudus were excellent out wide.
Spurs missed big chances through Solanke, Kudus and Gallagher, with Lammens keeping United in this.
United barely created anything in attack and Michael Carrick has a lot of work to do to turn this around.
His side looked so sluggish all over the pitch.
What a crazy moment as Conor Gallagher bulldozes his way through the United defense and is in.
Somehow Leny Yoro flicks the ball up into Gallagher’s face, the ball bounces down to him and he has a clear shot at goal.
Gallagher tries to prod it past Lammens but he makes a good save with his leg. Gallagher thumps the ground with his fist in despair.
Slapstick moments all over the place there. Audible laughter around me here in the press box. That was amusing.
Manchester United’s fans are not impressed at all with this.
Spurs are bullying them all over the pitch.
United have an xG of 0.00, which reflects their zero shots, and they have had zero touches in Spurs’ box after 30 minutes.
That just isn’t good enough.
Lovely play down the left from Spurs as Tonali, Udogie and Savio all combine.
The latter picks out the right winger, Kudus, on the penalty spot.
His low shot flashes just wide of the near post. He should score, or at least hit the target. The only thing you would say is Kudus was turning away from goal when he hit it.
Still, the moans and groans from the home fans here at Old Trafford are growing by the minute.
Spurs should really be 2-0 up and their manager Roberto De Zerbi can’t believe they aren’t ahead.
If Spurs could finish, they would be flying so far this season. They certainly aren’t playing like a team who are winless and bottom of the league. The Spurs fans here are loving it.
Old Trafford has mostly been silenced, as Spurs are all over Man United.
De Zerbi’s Spurs are overpowering United all over the pitch.
Lucas Bergvall smashes wildly over after a sustained spell of Spurs pressure.
United just can’t get on the ball and when they do, Spurs usually knock them off it with ease.
Carrick can’t be happy, at all, with this lackluster display. United’s main hope is to keep it level and hope Spurs run out of steam at some point.
Manchester United boss Michael Carrick looks very frustrated on the sidelines.
He has his hands in his pockets and doesn’t look very impressed after a slow start from United.
Just a few yards to his right Roberto De Zerbi is kicking every ball with his players, whistling and shouting and urging them on.
Spurs have been excellent and United can’t match their energy. The energy of Spurs’ fans in the away end also tells you how well they’ve started. You can only hear Tottenham Hotspur’s fans inside Old Trafford right now...
Oh wow.
Spurs should be 1-0 up.
Senne Lammens plays the ball to Mainoo but its short and Bergvall grabs the ball on the edge of the United box.
The loose ball drops to Dominic Solanke and he is clean through on goal.
But there’s no real conviction in his shot and Lammens stands tall and makes a great save, then grabs the rebound.
United caught out by Spurs’ press there as the best and worst of Lammens was on display.
Spurs snapping into tackles and United look so shaky on the ball at the back and in midfield.
Hello from moody Manchester!
Great optimism in the air here from both sets of fans as they mingled and chant back and forth on the trams heading to Old Trafford.
Let’s be honest, supporters of both United and Spurs haven’t had much to shout about so far this season and it feels like a huge game for both.
Probably more so for United, with Michael Carrick further along in his project and expectations always massive and a slow start to this season has seen doubts start to swirl.
Roberto De Zerbi needs his Spurs side to put in a good performance and grab a point, at least, as their huge rebuild is taking much longer to get going this season.
United’s fans have also been chanting about their rivals Manchester City and their current situation. A lot.
🌈 Rainbow in the sky here over Old Trafford before Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur.

The big surprises for Spurs are that Micky van de Ven and Omar Marmoush start on the bench, replaced in the lineup by Marcos Senesi and Dominic Solanke. It’s Sandro Tonali, Lucas Bergvall and Conor Gallagher in midfield with Mateus Fernandes also somewhat surprisingly not in the XI.

It looks like a back-three for Manchester United, with Amad Diallo and Luke Shaw out wide as wing backs. Still no Carlos Baleba in the starting lineup, so it’s Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo at the base of midfield again, with Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha the attacking trio up top.
Lammens - Yoro, Maguire, Martinez - Diallo, Tielemans, Mainoo, Shaw - Mbeumo, Fernandes, Cunha

Both Manchester United and Spurs are under pressure early in the season.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side are bottom of the table, with Spurs yet to win a game despite a summer of huge spending on new players.
Michael Carrick’s United have a couple of wins from their first five but haven’t looked great.
The pressure is on.
Below the Pro Soccer Talk crew preview this game, and what it means for both Carrick and De Zerbi.
Are Manchester United the favorites? Will Spurs get their first league win of the season?
There will surely be plenty of goals as two teams who’ve looked pretty leaky and wide-open defensively so far go head-to-head with the pressure on.
Here’s a look at the score predictions from the Pro Soccer Talk crew for Man United against Spurs.
Joe Prince-Wright: Manchester United 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur
Andy Edwards: Manchester United 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur
Nick Mendola: Manchester United 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur
This is maybe the first time in Pro Soccer Talk history that we’ve all predicted the same score for a game.
