PSG showed once again why they are the two-time reigning, defending champions of Europe on Tuesday, as they stayed perfect in this season’s UEFA Champions League by beating Barcelona 4-2.
Luis Enrique’s side remains top of the table with nine points from three games and a +9 goal difference. Barcelona entered the day in 2nd but are now 5th after dropping points for the first time.
- Five goals in the second half, including four in 14 minutes right at the end. As expected, PSG vs Barcelona did not disappoint.
- Desire Doue scored the opening goal late in the first half after Ousmane Dembele and Dani Olmo came off injured.
- Xavi Espart scored on his full Champions League debut to make it 1-1 in the 55th minute. The 19-year-old right back is the latest promising talent from Barca’s La Masia academy.
- Theo Hernandez headed home a corner kick for his first goal in almost three years in the 72nd, but Lamine Yamal scored a fantastic solo goal to level things once again just seven minutes later.
- Vitinha thumped one from outside the box for 3-2 in the 81st and Fabian Ruiz scored from the doorstep in the 86th. When Barcelona ran out of gas late, PSG simply kept coming with wave after wave.
It’s not as is Barcelona didn’t have three defenders right there to deal with the danger, it’s more that no one stepped to Desire Doue at the top of their penalty area. Eventually he found the lane he was looking for and beat Joan Garcia.
Who else but Désiré Doué? 🤩

19-year-old right back Xavi Espart has scored on his full Champions League debut and pulled Barcelona level with a fantastic goal in the 55th minute.
Espart and Fermin Lopez worked a fantastic one two out near midfield to open up space behind PSG’s defense. Espart went the rest of the way and finished well.
What a moment for the La Masia graduate Xavi Espart 👏

Lucas Hernandez hadn’t scored a goal since February 2024, but he’s the one to break the deadlock tonight. Joao Neves served up a peach of a corner kick and Hernandez rose highest and thumped it home.

Warren Zaire-Emery had been on the field for all of 30 seconds before Lamine Yamal faced him up 1v1, and it did not end well for PSG. Yamal sped past him and smashed the ball into the top of the goal to make it 2-2.

Barcelona were level for two minutes, now they’re behind for the third time in this game. What a strike from Vitinha.

It was always going to end this way, with PSG scoring a boatload of goals. Achraf Hakimi got in behind the left side of Barcelona’s defense and played the ball right across the face of goal for Ruiz to poke it in.

A big loss on both sides now, with Dani Olmo going down and having to come off in the 26th minute. He had a coming-together with Vitinha for a 50-50 ball and came out on the wrong side of it.
Fermin Lopez on to replace Olmo in midfield.

PSG and Barcelona have had to substitute a player each early on in this match 👀 pic.twitter.com/uuIx6FXovr
PSG are forced to make an early substitution, and it’s a big one for Luis Enrique’s side.
Ousmane Dembele had to come off after 19 minutes for an apparent hamstring injury. He was dribbling against two defenders in the open field before pulling up and reaching for the back of his left leg.
Ferran Torres is on to replace him — one former Barcelona player for another.

Rodri’s absence is already noticeable, as Barcelona — yes, Barcelona — are unable to pass their way out of the back against PSG’s high press. They will eventually work out their patterns and get in the game, but it’s been all PSG through five minutes.
Games like this are what the Champions League is all about. Two sides that play the sport at a completely different level, and let’s see who’s better.
Prior to lineups coming out, I would have said it’s a toss-up because Rodri is the one player in the world who can paper over their defensive frailties. But Rodri is on the bench, so it’s impossible not to lean toward PSG. He makes them so much better with and without the ball, which is fine against most teams in the world.
PSG is the one that it’s not. PSG 3-1 Barcelona.
Rodri isn’t in the starting lineup for Barcelona as he rests and recovers from what has been called a “minor muscle overload.”
The 30-year-old has been nearly ever-present for Barcelona this season, playing over 50 minutes in La Liga and 173 of 180 thus far in the Champions League. He also started three of Spain’s four games during the international break, so it makes sense that he would be closely protected just 13 months after tearing his ACL.
Logic aside, a real bummer — not just for Barca, but for the spectacle of this game. He will be a big miss in midfield, and massive shoes for 19-year-old Marc Bernal to fill.
