Cristiano Ronaldo’s last crack (we think) at winning the World Cup heads into the knockout rounds on Thursday, when Portugal face Croatia in one of the top ties of the round of 32 in Toronto.

It was a rocky start to the 2026 World Cup for Ronaldo and Portugal, as he looked miles off the same page as his teammates and last year’s UEFA Nations League winners slumped to a 1-1 draw with DR Congo. Ronaldo bounced back by scoring twice against Uzbekistan in game no. 2 (5-0 victory) 90 more minutes without a goal against Colombia (0-0 draw) to finish 2nd in Group K.
Croatia were beaten 4-2 by England in their Group L opener, but followed that up with victories over Panama (1-0) and Ghana (2-1) en route to finishing 2nd behind the Three Lions. Like Ronaldo, each game could also be the final farewell for 40-year-old Luka Modric, who crossed the 200-cap mark during the group stage
