Real Madrid to appeal Cristiano Ronaldo yellow for diving vs Rayo

Carlo Ancelotti called the yellow card Cristiano Ronaldo got for diving in Wedensday’s 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano “unbelievable” and Real Madrid has confirmed it will appeal the decision.

The yellow card was Ronaldo’s fifth of the season, resulting in a one-match suspension to be served in Saturday’s home match vs Eibar.

“I told the referee that I thought it was unbelievable not to give a penalty when he instead called it the other way,” Ancelotti said in his post-match press conference. The video above confirms his thoughts. As Ronaldo bursts into the penalty area one-on-one with Rayo’s Antonio Amaya, the 31-year-old defender comes flying in to make a tackle, upending Ronaldo while getting none of the ball. Referee Mario Melero instead showed Ronaldo a yellow for diving, a hilariously poor decision that reduced Ronaldo to a stunned look of incredulity.

Despite the obviously poor call, it’s slightly surprising that Real Madrid is appealing the decision. As it stands, Ronaldo would get his suspension out of the way in a game against 14th-placed Eibar. Should he have his suspension repealed and fall back to four yellow cards on the season, he would be at-risk for a suspension and could find himself missing any one of Madrid’s next seven fixtures to end the year which feature five top-10 teams and the 11th, 12th, and 13th place teams as it stands right now.

Should Ronaldo end up serving a yellow-card suspension, he wouldn’t face another unless he picked up another five yellow cards.

It’s laudable that referees are looking to stamp diving out of soccer, but they’re doing a horrible job of it. It seems more poor decisions are made by referees regarding simulation than correct ones, which does no good in the fight against diving. Sure, Ronaldo has a reputation for being a bit of a whiner, but this call was downright ridiculous. Next time you table-top one of your friends, show them a yellow card for diving. That would be the equivalent of this horrendous call.
